Dietz, Mills Crowned Champions; Lewicki Gets Hole in One

April 18th, 2017 – Firestone Country Club, Akron, Ohio

Randy Dietz (Windmill Golf Center) and Jon Mills (Kent State University) combined to shoot a 13-under par 129 over the past two days for an impressive 6 shot victory over the past two days to be named the 2017 NOPGA Pro-Pro Premier Champs. The premier was played for a fifth time and featured 22 teams. The 36-hole event returned to Firestone Country Club as play was contested on the North Course on Day 1 and the famed South Course on Day 2.

Dietz and Mills paced the field on Day 1 and Day 2. On Day 1, they shot an impressive 11-under, 61 on Day 1. The round featuring 11 birdies was the lowest round by 3 shots. Brad Apple (Belmont Country Club) and Tom Atchison (Salem Golf Club) combined 9 birdies and 1 bogey in route to an 8-under 64. On Day 2, Dietz and Mills fired a 2-under 68 to extend their lead to 6 shots as teams found it difficult to get into red numbers. The North Course yielded 96 birdies and 5 eagles on day 1 boasting a total stroke average 70.33. However, the highlight of the day came when Adam Lewicki (Portage Country Club) stepped up the 11th hole, his second hole and made an ace.

After play and dinner on Day 1, the annual putting competition was held on the practice green for the South Course. Six teams combined for a one-under total to advance to a putt off to determine who would participate in the shootout to determine the champion. After the putt off pared down the competition to three teams, Alan Keshock (GolfTec-Brecksville) and his partner Sean McGuire came out on top.

The South Course played to its image as a tough golf course that requires golfers to be very patient. On the day, golfers made 33 birdies and the course played to a stroke average of 3-over, 73. Only three teams broke par today, including Dietz and Mills. Last year’s champions Mike Stone (Belmont Country Club) and Steve Stone (Stone Ridge Golf Club) attempted to make a run at the repeat as they shot a 1-under 69. Noah Horstman (Beechmont Country Club) and John Powers (Cleveland State University) also shot a 1-under to move up to 5th place.

The next event held will be the Holden Pro-Pro Shootout at Avon Oaks Golf Club. This event will be held on Monday April 24th, 2017 with a 10am Shotgun and the format will be a Chapman Alternate Shot. Click HERE to visit the Tournament Information Page for Registration.
