Avon Oaks CC (Avon, Ohio) – April 24th, 2017
By Josh Diemer, NOPGA Junior Golf Tournament Director

Yesterday, 29 teams from across Northern Ohio converged at Avon Oaks Country Club to compete in the 2017 Holden Pro-Pro Shootout. This event was played under sunny skies, a high of 65 degrees, and a slight wind coming off Lake Erie. The qualifying format for this event was a Chapman Alternate Shot. This fun format is played by both players hitting their tee balls, hitting their partner’s ball, choosing the best ball, and alternating shots until that ball is holed. Ten teams qualified to the shootout.

During the morning qualifying, Jon Mills (Kent State) and Ned Weaver (Stonewater) combined to shoot an impressive 4-under, 68 to win the qualifying portion of the event. Eventual champions Mike Stone (Belmont) and Steve Stone (Stone Ridge) finished second in morning qualifying with a 3-under, 69. Mike Stone made a Hole-in-One on hole #12 to propel his team to the finish.

During the shootout, the teams that qualified had a slight change to the format. Instead of each player hitting two shots prior to choosing the best ball and playing alternate shot in, each player only got to hit one ball. Also, we had five teams go out on the front, and five teams go out on the back based on qualifying order. Each of the first three holes on both sides would have three teams competing based off qualifying order. The fourth hole on both sides were effectively the semi-final for the championship hole on 18.

After progressing through the shootout, the Stone brothers and Mark Evans (Mayfield Sand Ridge) and Mark Sierak (Barrington) advanced to the final hole. There was a dramatic finish as the Stone Brothers were able to claim victory on a pitch off after both teams made par on the hole.
