The 2013 National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship presented by COBRA PUMA GOLF has a strong 126-player field assembled to compete at PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Oct. 31–Nov. 3, for the 37th edition of the National Championship.

Highlighting the field in 2013 are three of the top-four finishers from the 2012 PGA Assistant Championship: Scooter Buhrman of Fayetteville, N.C., Charles Frost of Pineville, N.C., and Ryan Vermeer of Omaha, Neb. 2012 Champion Jake Scott of Strongsville, Ohio, is not competing this year.

Also in the field is Scott Erdmann of Tigard, Ore., who tied for runner-up in the 2011 PGA Professional National Championship at Hershey (Pa.) Country Club. Erdmann was also a member of the winning 2011 U.S. PGA Cup Team, who defeated Great Britain & Ireland at CordeValle in San Martin Calif.

In addition, Greg Bisconti of South Salem, N.Y., the Low PGA Club Professional in the 2009 PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., is in the field. Bisconti finished 74th in 2009.

Finally, Ashley Grier of Hagerstown, Md., the first female to compete in the Championship since Stephany Fleet of Muskegon, Mich., in 2011, is in the 2013 field.

In 2010, both Karen Paolozzi of Twinsburg, Ohio, and the former Jennifer Heinz (now Borocz) of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., made the cut.

Paolozzis’ tie for 10th place in the 2010 Championship marked the lowest finish by a woman professional or apprentice in the history of any PGA of America National Championship. PGA member national championships include the PGA Assistant Championship, the Senior PGA Professional National Championship and the PGA Professional National Championship.

Frank Bensel of Purchase, N.Y., is the only past champion in the field this year. Bensel won both the 2010 and 2011 Championships, becoming just the third player to win in back-to-back years.

The winner of the 2013 Championship will collect $9,000 of the $100,000 purse.

Also at stake is a spot in the 47th PGA Professional National Championship, June 22-25, 2013, in Myrtle Beach, S.C., at The Dunes Club and the Grande Dunes Resort Course. The Dunes Club will host the final two Championship rounds exclusively after the field is cut to the lowest 70 scores and ties.

Following the first 36 holes of play in the PGA Assistant Championship, the field for the final two rounds will be reduced to the low 70 scorers and ties.

For almost 40 years, the National Car Rental PGA Assistant Championship presented by COBRA PUMA GOLF has produced outstanding PGA Professionals who have gone onto successful careers in teaching and administering the game, as well as competing at the highest level.

Past competitors or champions include: Loren Roberts (Champion, 1979); Fred Funk (Champion, 1984); Rich Beem (third, 1998); Jeff Freeman (T-7, 1998); and Tim Thelen (Champion, 2009).

Since 1996, PGA assistant professionals and apprentices have come to PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla., for this National Championship.
