NOPGA Announces Its 2021 Tournament Schedule!

100TH PLAYING OF OHIO OPEN, NEW WOMEN’S EVENT HIGHLIGHT 75TH SEASON

WARRENSVILLE HEIGHTS, OH. – The playing of the 100th Ohio Open and a new event specifically for women highlight the 2021 schedule of the Northern Ohio Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America.
The NOPGA’s 75th season gets underway on April 19 at Firestone Country Club and includes more than 30 local events – including those deemed as “majors” — and will begin on April 19 and conclude October 19, barring any COVID-19 interruptions.
The Ohio Open will have a new – but familiar home – when it returns to renovated Westfield Country Club June 29-July 1. It marks the Open’s return to Westfield’s 36-hole layout for the first time since 2016.
Won by such notables as Jack Nicklaus (1956 as an amateur), Byron Nelson (1940-43), Tom Weiskopf (1965) and Herman Keiser (1949), the Open is the eminent event of the year and is one of six regarded as the NOPGA’s “major” events. The Open, contested over 54 holes, is acknowledged as the state championship.
The other majors include the Ohio Senior Open, the NOPGA Professional Championship, the NOPGA Senior Professional Championship, the Mitchell-Haskell Tour Championship and the Denny Shute Memorial Championship.
The Denny Shute Memorial is named after the Clevelander who was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame after twice winning the PGA Championship, the British Open and 15 other PGA Tour events during a long and distinguished career.
Firestone Country Club will play host to the Section’s first event, the Pro-Pro
Below are the significant events on the NOPGA schedule and a brief description of each. Also included in this release is the entire NOPGA schedule, as well as a schedule of the NOPGA Junior Tour.

While Bob Sowards solidified his status as the state’s top senior by winning his second straight Senior Open championship, amateur Howard Clendenin was the runnerup and amateurs Mike Cassell and Monty Guest dominated the Super Seniors competition. Sowards, 52, was the only player in the field to shoot two sub-par rounds with a pair of 68s and won by four shots over Clendenin, a Firestone member. Sowards became the sixth player to win multiple Senior titles to go with his three Ohio Open titles won in 2002, 2004 and 2010. Cassell (Hudson) and Guest (Solon) prevailed in the Super Seniors with Cassell posting rounds of 67-68-135 (5-under) for a 4-shot victory. His 36-hole score was the lowest by anyone in either division. Former Canton Brookside Director of Golf Gary Robison owns the most Senior Open titles, winning in 2004, 2010, 2015 and 2018.

Weiss, who lost to Stephen Gangluff as part of a three-man playoff for the title in 2019, got off to a rousing start with his opening 64 at Fox Meadow. After falling behind by two shots through 14 holes on the final day, Weiss rallied over the final three by taking advantage of rare miscues by Sowards.
