NOPGA Seniors Tackle Canton Brookside

Four members of the Northern Ohio PGA Section of the Professional Golfers Association of America will have an opportunity to advance to a national tournament next week when the SENIOR PROFESSIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP is conducted at Brookside Country Club in Canton.

The top four finishers will advance to the 2020 Senior PGA Professional National Championship, which will be held on October 15-18 at the PGA Golf Club in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The qualifying event will be conducted over 36 holes to a par of 71 at challenging Brookside, designed by the legendary Donald Ross in 1922.

With round of 69-67—136, Perrysburg’s Steve Stone was the medalist last year when the event was held at the Oberlin Golf Club. Stone, the Teaching Professional at Maumee Golf Center, edged five-time champion Gary Robison by one stroke.

Stone and Robison were joined by Lima’s Steve Mulcahy and two-time winner Tony Milam, of Chardon, as qualifiers. Robison, the Director of Golf at Brookside, will have a home-course advantage.

Brookside underwent a major renovation in 2003 in an attempt to recapture the original design by Ross. Reconstruction of bunkers, the rebuilding of the tees, a sculpting of fairways and reconfiguring the size and shape of the greens were including in the renovation.
