WEATHER PLAYS HAVOC WITH 39TH OHIO SENIOR OPEN; 1ST ROUND CANCELED; NOPGA HOPES TO FINISH THURSDAY

AKRON: Cold temperatures and a persistent, chilling rain left the course unplayable and caused cancellation of the first round of the 39th Ohio Senior Open on Wednesday at Firestone Country Club.

The event will be shortened to 18 holes, to be played Thursday with the field of 144 teeing off on the first and 10th tees of the Fazio Course at 8 a.m.
Officials from the Northern Ohio Section of the PGA said about half the field teed off in a steady rain and temperatures in the high 50s. All scores from the first round are cancelled.

This is just the second time in tournament history that the Senior Open has been shortened to 18 holes. The only other time came in 2014 when NOPGA Hall-of-Famer Tony Milam won by three shots with an 18-hole score of 5-under 65.

Wednesday’s original tee times will be used Thursday.
