WARREN: Players who are accustomed to winning lead their respective divisions after Monday’s first round of the Bob Woodfin Junior Golf Classic played at Trumbull Country Club.

Tuesday’s final 18 holes will be played at Old Avalon Golf Course.

The event is being held to honor the late Bob Woodfin who was the head professional at Trumbull Country Club for 33 years. It is being sponsored by Paige & Byrnes Insurance (John Taylor).  

East Liverpool’s Elijah Stewart leads the overall boys race following rounds of bogey-free 33-33=66 and his 4-under is four shots in front of second-place Kaden Schuette, of Independence, who came in at 34-36-70.

Fairview Park’s Kayla Knaze and Saijal Jawa, of Highland Heights, share the girls lead at 4-over 74 with Korrine Knaze one shot back.

Stewart, 14, has emerged as one of the best players on the Northern Ohio PGA Junior Tour. He has won six events this summer and stands second on the NOPGA Junior League Points Race.

Jawa, 14, has won twice this summer with one runner-up and one third-place finish. She stands in fifth place in the points standings.

Kayla Knaze, a senior at Magnificat, owns three victories this summer. Younger sister Korrine has not won this summer but has finished second three times and twice as a runner-up and is fourth in the points race.

Stewart had two birdies on the front nine and two on the back and had two par-saves by making clutch putts from about 12 feet.

At one point Schuette made five consecutive birdies and stood at 3-under through 13 holes but ran into trouble on the closing two holes with double-bogeys.

Medina’s Luca Violi is solo third with nines of 35-36, one stroke behind Schuette and one stroke in front of Hudson’s Barrett Atchison (39-33), Painesville’s Griffin Pickett (37-35) and Massillon’s Ben Wood (36-36).

This is the penultimate tournament of the season with next week’s Kenny Novak Junior Tour Championship remaining. Players are attempting to earn spot on the team that will represent the NOPGA in the fourth annual Junior Ohio Cup, to be played Oct. 16-18 at the Kinsale Golf and Fitness Club in Powell.

The top eight boys and girls on the points list make team.
